      The Secretary for Food and Health, Professor Sophia Chan, announced today (April 19) that a full accreditation status has been granted to the Hong Kong Institute of Speech Therapists (HKIST) under the Pilot Accredited Registers Scheme for Healthcare Professions (AR Scheme), authorising the institute as the accredited healthcare professional body responsible for administering a register for the speech therapy profession. Speech therapy is the first profession accredited under the Pilot AR Scheme.

     The Government today (June 19) announced that five healthcare professions are preliminarily assessed to meet the criteria for accreditation in phases under the Pilot Scheme of the Accredited Registers for Healthcare Professions, namely speech therapists, clinical psychologists, educational psychologists, audiologists and dietitians.

Under the principle of professional autonomy, the Pilot Scheme aims to enhance the existing society-based registration arrangements of healthcare professions currently not subject to statutory registration with a view to assuring the professional competence of healthcare professionals and providing more information for the public to make informed decisions.

     The Department of Health (DH) today (December 29) launched the Pilot Scheme of the Accredited Registers for Healthcare Professions and invited applications from eligible healthcare professional bodies for accreditation.

Under the principle of professional autonomy, the Pilot Scheme aims to enhance the existing society-based registration arrangements of healthcare professions currently not subject to statutory regulation with a view to ensuring the professional competency of healthcare personnel and providing more information for the public to make informed decisions.

Cosmetic Procedures to be Conducted Only by Registered Medical Practitioners/Registered Dentists

Introduction

In response to a fatal incident in October 2012 involving a beauty service company
offering invasive medical procedures, the Government established the Working Group on
Differentiation between Medical Procedures and Beauty Services (Working Group) under
the Steering Committee on Review of Regulation of Private Healthcare Facilities (Steering
Committee) to consider differentiating medical treatments from ordinary beauty services
and to make recommendations on the regulatory approach. The Steering Committee has
endorsed the recommendations of the Working Group, which included a list of the
cosmetic procedures that should only be performed by registered medical
practitioners/registered dentists.
